This lecture considers issues of performance in photography from a range of perspectives: subjects often perform according to social and cultural norms when a camera is present; photographers often perform to illicit the response they want from a subject. The lecture uses a wide range of visual examples including artists for whom performance is central, such as Cindy Sherman and Gregory Crewdson, as well as introducing new and contemporary perspectives. The lecture can include issues relevant to scenography, with the added dimension of how performance artists have used photographs as the final work and what types of still imagery are useful to performance artists in representing their work.
